Your outdoor living space

From the ground up

A great deck starts
before the first board.

These illustrations explain the major parts of a deck project. They help you understand the conversation behind the finished space, from its foundation to the way it meets your home.

01CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION · NOT A CONSTRUCTION PLAN

01 · Plan the space

Start with the way you live.

Think through dining, seating, shade, door access, and the route to your yard. A site review helps turn an appealing sketch into a layout that suits your home, grade, and available space.

02CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION · NOT A CONSTRUCTION PLAN

02 · Footings & posts

Support starts below the surface.

Footing locations and support requirements depend on the site, loads, and deck design. Establishing the right foundation is part of the project plan, with utilities and existing site conditions considered before excavation.

03CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION · NOT A CONSTRUCTION PLAN

03 · Beams & joists

Build the structure behind the finish.

Beams, joists, connections, and any required bracing work together to support the deck. Framing layout should be coordinated with the chosen decking, board direction, stairs, and railing attachments.

04CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION · NOT A CONSTRUCTION PLAN

04 · House connections

Protect the connection to your home.

An attached deck needs carefully planned structural connections and water management where it meets the house. A freestanding design may be appropriate in some situations. The existing wall assembly helps determine the right approach.

05CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION · NOT A CONSTRUCTION PLAN

05 · Decking & details

Bring the surface together.

Board layout, fastening, spacing, and edge treatments shape both appearance and performance. Wood and composite systems have different installation and care requirements. Use the selected product’s current instructions to guide the details.

06CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION · NOT A CONSTRUCTION PLAN

06 · Rails, stairs & finish

Make every transition intentional.

Plan guards, handrails, stairs, landings, and lighting as part of the whole deck. Review access, required inspections, and the completed scope before closeout, along with product care information and any written warranty terms.

Concept illustrations show components, not structural sizing, fastening schedules, or construction details. Every deck needs a design suited to its site, intended use, product instructions, and applicable requirements.

The builder’s perspective

A deck should feel
like part of your home.

The right deck connects your indoor life with the space outside. Choosing a builder with deck construction experience can help you look beyond the surface boards to the structure, house connections, and everyday details that make the space work.

Since 1998, Couch Custom Homes & Construction has been rooted in Denison. Bring us your deck ideas, and let’s discuss how the project can complement your home, your property, and the way you want to live.

Discuss Your Deck Project

See the whole connection.

Door thresholds, siding, flashing, drainage, and deck attachment all meet at the house. A builder’s broader understanding of the home can help coordinate these details before they become separate repair conversations.

Plan the structure and the finish.

Decking, framing, railings, and stairs need to work together. Planning them as one project helps align the look you want with the support, access, and installation details behind it.

Bring the project into focus.

A clear scope can address site preparation, materials, inspections, related repairs, and cleanup. Establishing responsibilities and discussing changes in advance helps make the work easier to understand.

Choose the right fit

Build confidence
into your plans.

Ask any contractor about relevant deck experience, insurance, who will do the work, and how permits and inspections will be handled. Request a written scope and review product and workmanship warranty terms. Experience with your type of deck matters more than a title alone.
