Share what you know about your roof and what you would like to address. Photos, the approximate age of the roof, and your project goals are useful starting points for a conversation.
Understand your roof
Built in layers. Protected in the details.
The shingles you see are one part of a complete roofing system. Knowing what belongs underneath helps you ask better questions—and compare more than color and price.
01 · Decking
A sound surface underneath
The deck is the foundation for the roof covering. During tear-off, exposed sheathing can be checked for deterioration and unsuitable fastening surfaces. Discuss how repairs will be documented and priced before new materials cover them.
02 · Felt & underlayment
Protection beneath the shingles
Underlayment adds a protective layer between the deck and shingles. Felt or synthetic products should suit the selected roof system; leak barriers address vulnerable locations where specified. Correct overlaps help the layers work together.
03 · Drip edge
Details at the perimeter
Metal drip edge helps direct runoff away from exposed deck edges. Eaves and rakes need appropriate detailing, including the relationship between the metal and underlayment. Follow the selected system’s instructions and applicable requirements for your home.
04 · Starter strips
A deliberate first course
Purpose-made starter strips establish the roof edge beneath the first shingle course. Their placement and sealant help support edge performance. The starter, field shingles, and edge details should be planned as a coordinated assembly.
05 · Shingle courses
Layout that carries through
Aligned courses, specified exposure, and correct fastening are essential installation details. Nailing location and application requirements depend on the chosen product. Straight lines are visible; the fastening underneath deserves equal attention.
06 · Flashing & finish
The connections complete the system
Valleys, walls, penetrations, hips, and ridges need their own details. Flashing and ventilation should be considered with the rest of the roof. Before closeout, ask to review completed work, cleanup, and the written warranty terms.
Illustrations explain the components; they are not project photos or installation drawings. Installation details and sequencing depend on the selected products, roof conditions, and applicable requirements.

These TAMKO Heritage Series videos show specific installation techniques. They are manufacturer demonstrations; your selected shingle system may have different requirements.
A reroof is an investment in the home underneath it. Choosing a builder with roofing experience can bring a broader understanding of how the roof, framing, walls, and exterior details work together.
At Couch Custom Homes & Construction, that conversation starts with your home and your goals. Let’s discuss the roof you have, the concerns you want addressed, and the scope that makes sense for your property.
A whole-home assessment considers whether staining, damaged fascia, or deteriorated decking points to work beyond the shingle covering. Identifying those connections helps define the right scope.
Coordinate the connections.
Roofing meets siding, masonry, gutters, and attic spaces. A builder with relevant experience can help coordinate related repairs instead of treating each trade as a separate conversation.
Make the scope clear.
Discuss materials, hidden-damage allowances, flashing, ventilation, cleanup, and responsibility for each part of the work before the project begins. A clear written scope makes proposals easier to compare.
Choose with confidence
Ask for the details that matter.
The builder title alone does not establish roofing expertise. Ask any contractor about relevant reroofing experience, insurance, who performs the work, product instructions, and written workmanship and manufacturer warranty terms.
